The warm fragrance of a scented candle will lift your spirts, even when the candle is not lit. So when you come home tired and frazzled, the aroma & flickering glow of a scented wax candle will relieve your tightness & lift your spirits.
Scented candles are great gifts for every season and all occasions; especially when they are hand crafted by yours truely.
1. Select Your Fragrance For Candle Making
Fragrance oil can be purchased in most craft shops. You can also look for it on the internet. I would suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather than going for cheap water or alcohol based fragrances. Because your wax mix is oil based, your fragrance must also be oil based. Why? As oil & water do not mix, a water based perfume tends not to mix with oil based wax.
2. Select Your Wax
The basics of making scented candles are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by selecting your wax. These days the market offers a versatile range of wax, starting from natural waxes made from beeswax, palm or soy and on to gel or paraffin wax. You’ll want to decide on the aromatic intensity for your candles before choosing your wax. For instance, in case of gel candles, gel wax with less density holds less fragrance compared to gel wax with higher density.
3. The Art of Scented Candle Making
Now that we’ve covered wax selection, let’s talk about the process of creating scented candles.
The first step is to melt your wax. For this purpose, a double boiler can be used. Meaning place the wax in a small pot & place that pot into a slightly larger container partially filled with tap water. You may now heat the water. Use a thermometer to ensure the wax is not burnt. The temperature should be maintained at 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit.
After the wax is melted, insert a wick into the mold and remove your wax from it’s source of heat. Next add your fragrance oil. A mixture of 1 ounce fragrance oil to 1 pound wax will produce a fragrance that permeates your candle up to 6% of its density. Greater amounts of fragrance oil will cause the candle to burn out quicker.
Now pour the melted wax mixture into your mold. The only job remaining is to let it cool before removing your candle from it’s mold.
Congratulations on a job well done!
4. Try Different Things as You Go
You will develop expertise in all aspects of the candle craft when you start experimenting. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the art of candle making and thoroughly enjoy the process.
It’s a great feeling to gift your loved ones with a homemade scented candle knowing that they will find the fragrance both relaxing and invigorating.
